Create a Happy Life That's Sustainable

I should have started with a podcast and not a blog. You know why? Because no one reads anymore – besides you, dear reader, you old school hipster you 😉 I bet you don’t even own a computer.

It’s 2017 and everything is digital and more convenient. I mean think about it: watches went the way of the dinosaurs until Apple said it was cool to wear one again because it had a screen and showed you your texts so you wouldn’t have to pick up your phone. Digital AND convenient.

Why the long intro diatribe you ask? Because I love the #MyTwoCents podcast. It’s digital, it’s convenient, and it’s safer to listen to in your car than it is to read a blog post.

When Justin reached out to me, asking if I’d join him on the #MyTwoCents podcast, I was humbled and excited. Here was a good friend who I’d known for years, a celebrity in his own right, asking me to be a part of this exciting new project. I remember a year or two prior Justin talking about potentially maybe possibly in the future starting a podcast and I remember how cool I thought that was and how it would be fun to do that with him if possible. Of course I said “yes.”

The reason Justin wanted to start the podcast was the same reason I started this blog: to share the tips, tricks, habits, and practices that helped me become a happier person and by proxy, a BETTER version of myself. As Justin might put it, we both set out to “infect” those around us, in the most positive way possible.

Justin and his wife Steph are quickly becoming a “brand” in their own right: over 100k followers solely on the gram, a YouTube channel, a mobile fitness app, and their apparel line “I Am Built,” which is also their personal mantra that I love, because it’s malleable enough to fit any situation (I am built for success, I am built to improve, I am built for a great week, etc.). Check out #iambuilt on any social app to see how many people they’ve inspired by who they are and the way they live their lives.

Because of what they’ve built (pun intended), and similar to others in the public eye, people all over the world take interest in what they do on a daily basis, what they think, how they think, and generally who they are as people. Through this process and being 1/2 of Justin’s podcast, some of Justin and Steph’s followers have become my followers as well, reaching out to me at times to thank me for what I bring to the podcast, and at times wanting to know more about a specific topic or topics we discussed on a recent episode.

Which brings me back to why we’re here: something new to MentalGymnastics will be musings on our #MyTwoCents podcast. This could be in the form of a behind the scenes story about me and Justin recording that never made it onto an episode (such as “The Lost Episodes” that frequent listeners will remember), to expanding on a meditative / mindfulness / “how to be happier” topic covered on one of the shows, to my favorite episode for those who’ve recently started listening, to fun stories from Justin and my past that relate to something we’ve talked about on an episode.

To get the ball rolling, something we covered in Episode 21 (and others, for that matter) is staying present. Yes, we can all get in the lotus position and meditate, but there ARE some easier ways to achieve the same goal. Staying present is being mindful, being in the moment. That could be doing ANYthing where one isn’t distracted by something else, whether it’s other humans, something going on around them, or looking at their phone (which, I’m willing to bet, is the winner when it comes to “what pulls us out of the moment” most).

Below are some “mindfulness hacks” that have helped me practice mindfulness when not pretending to be a monk:

1) Brushing Your Teeth – literally think of nothing but the task at hand
2) Cooking – because burning yourself on the stove is not a good look
3) Working Out – focus on your breathing
4) Before Falling Asleep – mini meditation practice

Oh and what was that last word?! PRACTICE! Nothing will be easy right away, but by practicing mindfulness, you’ll be able to tap into it at any given time of the day…which Justin and I also talk about in Episode 21 haha.
